GoGuardian DNS

  1. Traffic to blocked sites that use HTTPS should show "Blocked" page and not "Privacy error"

When you visit http://www.echeat.com and have it set to be blocked, you get the Blocked by GoGuardian page. When you visit the same address with HTTPS you get a "Privacy Error" (Chrome) or similar, depending on the browser. Access to the page is being blocked which is great. But the expected behavior is to get the Blocked page regardless of protocol.

Most sites are auto redirecting from http to https versions of their sites. Our staff is going to be confused when they see a privacy warnings and not a Blcoked notification.

  2. Reference Internal IP

It would be nice to be able to see the Internal IP of the device that is going through GG DNS to be able to track down which device was used in case of inappropriate content.

  3. The DNS Traffic page needs to be scrollable/pageable

Currently you can only see DNS activity that fits on one page or use a search term. In many cases search isn't an option because you don't know what you're looking for. In this case you can only see the last few minutes of DNS filter activity. This list needs to be Scrollable or Pageable so you can browse the activity like you can with the All Students page

  4. Whitelist captive.apple.com to prevent breaking iPhone access

Currently, when our students with iPhones try to connect to our Student Wireless network (filtered with GoGuardian DNS) they immediately get an error message saying that they are not connected to the internet and need to sign in.

At that point the phone tries to open a "sign in page" to let the user sign in and they just see a GoGuardian DNS block page instead. Students then (understandably) think that they have been blocked from the network and won't be able to access any sites.

What's happening is that the iPhone's captive portal detection works by trying to access …

  5. Dynamic IP Address updating client for GoGuardian DNS

Our School receives internet access through the County Office of education, and they don't provide us with a static public IP address.

That means that our public IP address changes, and more than that, the range of possible public IP addresses that we could be assigned is shared with other schools in the district that might want their own GoGuardian DNS Policies.

When we used Cisco/Umbrella/OpenDNS we happily used their Dynamic IP Updater to push changes in our Public IP address to OpenDNS automatically https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227987867-What-is-the-OpenDNS-Dynamic-IP-updater-client- . I hope that GoGuardian DNS will add such a client soon.

  7. Add Public IP Range or CIDR formatting when configuring DNS settings

To prevent the possibility of denying traffic after changing internal forwarders to GG DNS. Their should be an option to add an Public IP range or CIDR formatting instead of individual public IP Addresses. We have over 50+ Public IP ranges in our district some are broken up by each school site, others by devices.
